Facts About the Board

The Georgia Composite Medical Board was established by O.C.G.A § 43-34-1 to protect the health of Georgians through the proper licensing of physicians and certain members of the healing arts and through the objective enforcement of the Medical Practice Act.

Facts about the Board

  • The Board issues licenses to physicians, physician assistants, respiratory care professionals, perfusionists, acupuncturists, orthotists, prosthetists, auricular (ear) detoxification specialists, residency training permits, cosmetic laser practitioners, pain management clinics, and genetic counselors.
  • The Board promulgates rules and regulations governing the practice of medicine in Georgia.  The Board also investigates complaints and is responsible for disciplining medical professionals who violate the Medical Practice Act or other professional rules and regulations.
  • The Board currently licenses more than 59,000 health care professionals.
  • The Board consists of 15 members appointed by the Governor: 13 physician members (11 Doctors of Medicine and two Doctors of Osteopathy) and two members representing the general public. One physician assistant member is appointed by the Board and serves in a non-voting, ex officio capacity.
  • The Board is a public agency that serves the people of Georgia, and its budget is appropriated by the General Assembly every legislative session.
  • The full Board meets every month, usually the first Thursday of the month.
  • Board meetings and disciplinary hearings are open to the public.  However, certain committee business and other agenda items may be conducted in closed session.
  • Anyone can verify a license through the Board's website.  The online tool allows patients to find information about education, training, licensure history, and disciplinary records (if any).
  • Consumers who have had problems with a licensee may file a complaint with the Board. The Board reviews complaints about its licensees.  This does not include hospitals, clinics, or other health care institutions (aside from pain management clinics which are licensed through the Board).
  • Important information about the Board, its work, and other resources can be found on the Board’s website. Click around the site to learn more!
