Meet the Board Chairman

A Brief Bio of Chairman George Harrison, MD :

Dr. George E. Harrison is a native Georgian and board-certified Family Physician with nearly three decades of clinical practice, the majority of which have been in Hospital Medicine. A graduate of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Harrison completed his Family Medicine residency at Duke University Hospital, where he also served as Chief Resident. He holds a Master of Medical Management from Tulane University and is a Certified Physician Advisor and Healthcare Quality Manager. Throughout his career, he has practiced in traditional primary care, urgent care, and hospital-based settings across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, holding numerous hospital and state leadership roles. He also served as adjunct faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he trained Family Medicine residents in rural healthcare delivery.

Hailing from rural Emanuel County and deeply passionate about rural healthcare, Dr. Harrison joined the National Health Service Corps and honorably fulfilled his service obligation before becoming a dedicated hospitalist and medical director. He later served as Chief Medical Officer at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, Georgia, where he helped advance healthcare delivery for the citizens of rural central Georgia. As part of an executive team, he helped lead the hospital to achieve multiple Leapfrog "A" Hospital Safety Grades, a CMS 5-Star Quality Rating, recognition as one of the Top 100 Rural and Community Hospitals in the nation, and designation as a Joint Commission Top Performer.

Dr. Harrison currently serves as a Corporate Medical Director and Physician Advisor with Hospital Corporation of America (HCA Healthcare), where he drives measurable improvements in utilization management, quality outcomes, and operational efficiency, while continuing to practice hospital medicine part-time.

In addition to serving on the Georgia Composite Medical Board, Dr. Harrison holds memberships with the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Hospital Medicine, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the American College of Physician Advisors, and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Professionals. He remains dedicated to protecting the health and safety of all Georgians—especially those in our state's most vulnerable rural communities—as they navigate an increasingly complex medical landscape.

Greetings, and welcome to the Georgia Composite Medical Board.

As Chair of the Georgia Composite Medical Board (GCMB), I am pleased to welcome you to our website and to the important work we do on behalf of the people of Georgia and our healthcare professionals.

The Georgia Composite Medical Board is comprised of fifteen dedicated volunteer members appointed by the Governor, along with an ex-officio physician assistant member appointed by the Board. Our membership includes thirteen practicing physicians and two consumer members. Together with our highly skilled Executive Director and professional staff, we work collaboratively to fulfill our responsibility to the public and the medical community with integrity, transparency, and accountability.

Our foremost mission is to protect the health, safety, and well-being of the people of Georgia by licensing qualified physicians and other healthcare professionals in the healing arts and by promoting high standards of professional practice throughout our state.

The Board is supported by a dedicated team of professionals with expertise in legal services, law enforcement investigations, credentialing, licensing, and other essential areas. We are also fortunate to have active, practicing allied health professionals who serve on committees and provide valuable expertise in the licensing and oversight of the professions within the Board's jurisdiction.

Our work carries a profound responsibility. Every licensing decision, investigation, and regulatory action is undertaken with the understanding that public confidence in our healthcare system depends upon a fair, professional, and accountable regulatory process. We are committed to continuously strengthening public trust, supporting excellence in healthcare, and ensuring that our decisions uphold our ultimate responsibility: to protect and promote the health of every Georgian.
